Cloud Security Cameras Without an NVR

What cloud-managed actually means: footage stored on each camera, management and clips in the cloud, and no recorder to buy, rack, or replace — with US list pricing and a worked 8-camera budget.

The short answer

“Cloud security cameras” means cameras that store footage on the device and are managed from a cloud dashboard — not cameras streaming everything to a data center. There are two costs: hardware, paid once, and a license per camera per term ($249 per camera per year at list on a 1-year term, or $659 for three years). A worked 8-camera site — six indoor domes, two outdoor bullets on 3-year licenses — totals $16,264 at US list. No NVR, no VMS license, no drive swaps. Request a site quote.

HTS is a Verkada Diamond Plus partner serving Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware since 2019. We carry two cloud-managed camera lines — Verkada and Meraki MV — and quote both.

How cloud-managed cameras actually work

  • Footage lives on the camera. A 256GB model holds up to 30 days of footage locally; bigger onboard storage holds more.
  • The cloud carries management. Live view, clips, sharing links, user accounts, updates, and alerts — from anywhere, no VPN, no port-forwarding.
  • Cloud backup is optional. 30-day off-device backup is $149 per camera per year at list, for sites that want footage to survive a stolen or destroyed camera.
  • No recorder. Nothing to rack, cool, or replace — each camera is its own recorder, and the license covers the platform, updates, and on-camera storage.

What you stop buying

Against a traditional NVR build, the recorder stack disappears: recorders at $517–$2,947.50 at US list across the lines we carry (enterprise storage servers run far higher), VMS licensing at about $40 per channel, surveillance drives and their 3–5-year replacement labor, and a server closet with UPS power and cooling. That stack is what the per-camera license replaces.

Cloud-managed vs cloud-stored

When you compare bids, separate two things vendors often blur. Cloud-managed is where the dashboard, users, and updates live. Cloud-stored is where footage lives. On the cameras described here, management is in the cloud and footage is on the device by default, with off-device backup as an add-on — so continuous video is not leaving the site by default. Platforms that ship footage to cloud storage by default carry the bandwidth and storage to price it in; ask where the footage lives before you compare a per-camera number.
